The ferry
Take the classic yellow ferry across the river! It runs between Avan and Norra Sunderbyn and is an easy (and rather cosy) way to cross the water as long as the river isn’t frozen. When there’s a queue, the ferry runs continuously until everyone has crossed.

The iceroad
When the river freezes, the ice road takes over! During winter, it replaces the ferry and allows you to drive across the ice between Avan and Norra Sunderbyn. The road is maintained and monitored by the Swedish Transport Administration – but remember, it’s only open when the ice is thick enough. The ice can be used both by drivers and pedestrians.

Train and air
Travelling to or from Unbyn or Avan by train or plane?
Luleå Airport (Kallax) is the closest airport. From Unbyn, the drive takes about 25 minutes, and from Avan around 20 minutes, depending on your route. The airport offers daily flights to Stockholm and seasonal routes to other destinations.
If you're arriving by train, SJ and Norrtåg stop in both Boden and Luleå.
• From Unbyn, it’s about 15 minutes to Boden and 25 minutes to Luleå.
• From Avan, the easiest way to reach Boden is via Unbyn, with a travel time of roughly 20–25 minutes, depending on conditions. The route to Luleå takes about 20 minutes.
From Luleå or Boden, it’s easy to reach the area by car, taxi or bus (line 29). No matter how you travel, both Unbyn and Avan are conveniently located—close to the city, yet right by nature.
